Lyuba

Who would think that a 40,000-year-old carcus would be cute? Lyuba, the baby woolly mammoth that was found in 2007, is on display at the Field Museum in Chicago until September. I had the pleasure of seeing her in person. She is adorable! She still has patches of hair on her legs and she even has eyelashes! Her display is within the exhibit called "Mammoths and Mastodons" and it does cost extra.
I spent about an hour and a half in the exhibit, mostly looking at Lyuba. It is extraordinary and sad to be so close to an extinct animal. I never thought I would see a real wolly mammoth in person and the experience left me bewildered and fasinated by her. It was one thing to see the dinosaur bones in the evolution exhibit, and quite another to see an extinct animal that still has skin and fur on it. The museum does not want anyone taking any pictures within the exhibit, so I don't have any with me and Lyuba.
I highly recommend seeing this exhibit. It's worth the few extra bucks to see a real woolly mammoth and to support the museum. I also recommend the tortilla soup in the Corner Bakery.
